Mission Direct is an Inter-denominational, International Christian not for profit organization. The organisation was founded by a team with a vision to be of practical help and a desire to bring spiritual hope to some of the world’s poorest people. Tim Martindale (one of the founders) is an active member of GBC, and GBC helps to support the work of Mission Direct.

Mission Direct works in partnership with local tradesmen to support indigenous businesses and skills, existing health, education and housing projects to improve their capacity and facilities and local NGO’s, churches and charities to help them help themselves. We do not start projects, we simply join local people in what they are already doing, helping one by one.

Those we serve have profound needs and sometimes the poverty is overwhelming. Yet together we can impact the lives of individuals and communities and it’s possible to make a real difference. We see lives changed, of those we serve as well as those who go to serve.

We are currently working in Uganda, Moldova, Cambodia, Zambia, Dominican Republic, Sierra Leone and Brazil.
We take out volunteers on 2 week Mission Trips. Anyone and everyone is invited to join us, regardless of age, skills or ability.

Here follows a bit about a few of the volunteers from Godmanchester Baptist Church who went out with us :

Pat’s Visit to Moldova

Going to Moldova with Mission Direct was an ideal way to fulfil a long standing ambition to see Eastern Europe. We had a taste of Romania as well. As is costs twice as much to fly directly into Moldova, we flew into Bucharest and drove over the border into Moldova. The border crossing was something I was grateful to do in a group. We were advised to sit quietly and respond in a respectful manner. This process can be very time consuming.

We had been told that Moldova is a poor country, and it was a great privilege to be able to help some who were in great need. We did some demolition and helped with rebuilding. One lady who received our ministrations changed from being depressed and miserable to a bright laughing individual. We were the richer for seeing her joy.

I found it hard to imagine a country without a single public swimming facility, but Romania had recently opened a large Water Sports venue and on our way home we made good use of that. Mission Direct staff can always be expected to find this type of “bonus” for its volunteers!

Rachel in Cambodia

Our team was working in the capital of Phnom Pehn with an Australian couple and a Cambodian pastor who are creating a new community outside of the city, for people from a slum called Happy Village.

Mission Direct were asked if they could fund and build secure porches onto the front of 18 existing one room houses and the volunteer teams built them. This building now keeps the residents of New Happy Village secure from gangs and thieves.

We found out about the Cambodia’s history, the brutality of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970’s by visiting the killing fields and Toul Sleng Prison, now a museum. Its awful to think that 70% of the population are under 30 years of age and only 1/5 of these know nothing or very little about the Khmer Rouge years.

We visited a rubbish dump in the city where people live and try to find a living selling recyclable items. This was heartbreaking watching them search through rubbish, and see their makeshift huts on top of the rubbish with their families.
